    Social And Environmental Sustainability In Waterfront Redevelopment: A Case Study Of Inspiration Lakeview

    This paper is a case study of the Inspiration Lakeview Master Plan in Port Credit, Mississauga. This paper speaks to the history of urban waterfronts and examines the evolution of urban waterfront (re)development in urban port cities from previously industrial eras to now modern-day planning. This paper is divided into sections focusing on social and environmental sustainability measures that are identified in the Master Plan. Social sustainability is analyzed in terms of housing and built form, employment, the notion of complete communities and public health, as well as transit. Environmental sustainability indicators focus on greenspace, stormwater management and waste management. This paper analyzes how social and environmental sustainability is accounted for and critiques the measures identified in the Master Plan to evaluate if what is being presented is adequate or if more robust measures should be implemented

    The Wide Field Imaging Interferometry Testbed

    We are developing a Wide-Field Imaging Interferometry Testbed (WIIT) in support of design studies for NASA's future space interferometry missions, in particular the SPIRIT and SPECS far-infrared/submillimeter interferometers. WIIT operates at optical wavelengths and uses Michelson beam combination to achieve both wide-field imaging and high-resolution spectroscopy. It will be used chiefly to test the feasibility of using a large-format detector array at the image plane of the sky to obtain wide-field interferometry images through mosaicing techniques. In this setup each detector pixel records interferograms corresponding to averaging a particular pointing range on the sky as the optical path length is scanned and as the baseline separation and orientation is varied. The final image is constructed through spatial and spectral Fourier transforms of the recorded interferograms for each pixel, followed by a mosaic/joint-deconvolution procedure of all the pixels. In this manner the image within the pointing range of each detector pixel is further resolved to an angular resolution corresponding to the maximum baseline separation for fringe measurements. We present the motivation for building the testbed, show the optical, mechanical, control, and data system design, and describe the image processing requirements and algorithms.     IceSat 2 ATLAS Photon-Counting Receiver - Initial On-Orbit Performance

    Photon-counting receivers are deployed on the NASA Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat2) Advance Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS). The ATLAS laser altimeter design has total six ground tracks with three strong and three weak tracks. The strong track has nominally 4 times more laser power than the weak track. The receiver is operated in photon counting mode. There are 16 photon-counting channels for each strong track and 4 photon-counting channels for each weak track. Hamamatsu photomultiplier with a 4x4-array anode was used as photon counting detector. This receiver design has high counting efficiency (>15%) at 532 nm, low dark count rate (<400 counts per second), low jitter (less than 285ps), short dead time (<3 ns), long lifetime under large solar background radiation, radiation harden for space operation, and ruggedized for survives the harsh vibration during the launch.     Reference Interferometer Using a Semiconductor Laser/LED Reference Source in a Cryogenic Fourier-Transform Spectrometer

    A combination of a single mode AlGaAs laser diode and broadband LED was used in a Michelson interferometer to provide reference signals in a Fourier transform spectrometer, the Composite Infrared Spectrometer, on the Cassini mission to Saturn. The narrowband light from the laser produced continuous fringes throughout the travel of the interferometer, which were used to control the velocity of the scan mechanism and to trigger data sampling. The broadband light from the LED produced a burst of fringes at zero path difference, which was used as a fixed position reference. The system, including the sources, the interferometer, and the detectors, was designed to work both at room temperature and instrument operating temperature of 170 Kelvin. One major challenge that was overcome was preservation, from room temperature to 170 K, of alignment sufficient for high modulation of fringes from the broadband source. Another was the shift of the source spectra about 30 nm toward shorter wavelengths upon cooldown

    Patient Perspectives on Adherence to the New Hepatitis C Antiviral Medications: ‘A New Lease on Life’

    This study explored patients’ perspectives about taking the new direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for the treatment of Hepatitis C (i.e., sofosbuvir, simeprevir, ledipasvir/sofosbuvir, ombitasvir/paritraprevir/ritonavir and dasabuvir) to identify facilitators of medication adherence. The project was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 12 Veterans who successfully completed a treatment course on the new DAAs. The Veterans were recruited using purposive sampling. The data collected from the semi-structured interviews was analyzed using an adapted open coding method outlined by Auerbach and Silverstein (2003), with identification of relevant text sub-grouped into repeating ideas, and then creation of overarching themes and constructs. Results obtained provide insight into factors that influenced the Veterans’ medication adherence during the course of treatment. Key constructs, embodying major themes supported by repeating ideas, included recognizing the “burden of HCV,” the importance of the “treatment engagement process,” and anticipation of “positive outcomes.” Clinical implications are discussed

    Machine Learning for Prediction of Cognitive Health in Adults Using Sociodemographic, Neighbourhood Environmental, and Lifestyle Factors

    The environment we live in, and our lifestyle within this environment, can shape our cognitive health. We investigated whether sociodemographic, neighbourhood environment, and lifestyle variables can be used to predict cognitive health status in adults. Cross-sectional data from the AusDiab3 study, an Australian cohort study of adults (34–97 years) (n = 4141) was used. Cognitive function was measured using processing speed and memory tests, which were categorized into distinct classes using latent profile analysis. Sociodemographic variables, measures of the built and natural environment estimated using geographic information system data, and physical activity and sedentary behaviours were used as predictors. Machine learning was performed using gradient boosting machine, support vector machine, artificial neural network, and linear models. Sociodemographic variables predicted processing speed (r2 = 0.43) and memory (r2 = 0.20) with good accuracy. Lifestyle factors also accurately predicted processing speed (r2 = 0.29) but weakly predicted memory (r2 = 0.10). Neighbourhood and built environment factors were weak predictors of cognitive function. Sociodemographic (AUC = 0.84) and lifestyle (AUC = 0.78) factors also accurately classified cognitive classes. Sociodemographic and lifestyle variables can predict cognitive function in adults. Machine learning tools are useful for population-level assessment of cognitive health status via readily available and easy-to-collect data

    Hard Ferromagnets as a New Perspective on Materials for Thermomagnetic Power Generation Cycles

    We consider the ways in which magnetically hard materials can be used as the working materials in thermomagnetic power generation (TMG) cycles in order to expand the area in the magnetisation vs. applied field (MHM-H) plane available for energy conversion. There are 3 parts to this Perspective. First, experiments on commercially available hard ferrites reveal that, while these materials are not yet good TMG candidates, hard ferromagnets with higher thermal conductivity and a greater change of magnetization with temperature could outperform existing TMG materials. Second, computational results indicate that biasing a soft magnet with a hard ferromagnet is essentially equivalent to shifting the MHM-H loop by an amount proportional to the field of the biasing magnet. Work outputs under biased conditions show a substantial improvement over unbiased cycles, but experimental verification is needed. Third, we discuss the rationale for exploring artificial spin reorientation materials as novel TMG working materials.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

    Associations of neighbourhood environmental attributes and socio-economic status with health-related quality of life in urban mid-aged and older adults : Mediation by physical activity and sedentary behaviour

    This study examined the associations of objectively assessed physical features of the neighbourhood environment with physical and mental aspects of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as measured by the SF-36, and the roles of physical activity and sedentary behaviour in these associations. We used data from a national sample of Australian mid-aged and older adults living in urban areas (N = 4141). Environmental attributes were computed for 1-km-radius areas surrounding participants' residential addresses. Neighbourhood socio-economic status (SES) and average annual concentrations of PM2.5 were the only attributes related to HRQoL in the expected direction in the total- and direct-effect regression models. All other environmental attributes were related to HRQoL via physical activity behaviours and leisure-time sitting. The associations of most environmental features with HRQoL mediated by physical activity and sedentary behaviours were inconsistent, positive through some pathways and negative through others. This study suggests that neighbourhood SES may in part benefit HRQoL by helping promote an active lifestyle. Neighbourhood attributes defining walkability may benefit HRQoL by providing opportunities for walking and resistance training and, through these, by helping reduce leisure-time sitting. However, the same attributes also may limit opportunities for household activities and gardening and negatively impact on HRQoL through these pathways
